Lion, Bear, Wolf or Dolphin
Welcome back to The Circle Sessions! In today's episode, we're taking a deep dive into the fascinating world of sleep chronotypes and how they affect our daily lives.
Host Brett Johnson breaks down the four animal sleep chronotypes - lion, bear, wolf, and dolphin - and discusses how understanding your own chronotype can supercharge your productivity and podcasting game. So, whether you're an early riser like a lion, a night owl like a wolf, or somewhere in between, figuring out your peak performance times is key to creating top-notch podcast content.
Let's explore the link between sleep chronotypes and podcasting success and discover how to harness your body's natural rhythms for an epic podcasting experience.

We focus on marketing, social media, monetization, and website design to help you implement all of these together. This week, you got me, My Podcast Guy from Circle 270 Media Podcast Consultants. And we're gonna talk about what your chronotype is. We'll dive into this in just a minute.
Brett Johnson [:But, you know, sometimes it's important to kinda step away from the the intricacies and the specifics about podcasting and look at yourself, how you tackle the day. And doctor Michael J Breuis, PhD, came up with 4 different animal types to describe us. The lion, the bear, the wolf, and the dolphin. Let's let's figure out who you are. Now Dr. Breuis is a clinical psychologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He says that we each have a sleep chronotype that reflects our body's natural preference for when to fall asleep and to wake up. They're tied to our circadian rhythm, our internal body clock that regulates cycles of alertness and sleepiness. But sleep chronotypes may also be associated with certain personality traits or habits.
Brett Johnson [:So figuring these out can actually help you figure out what, animal sleep kingdom that you belong to and also tweak your work day, tweak your rest period to be the best that you can be during the day. And and then in essence, create the best podcast you can. Create the best content to, you know, line up the right interviews to really focus well on what you wanna do with your podcast. So let's take a look at the lion. You know, people with the lion chronotype tend to wake up early, often around 5 o'clock and feel most energetic and productive before noon. So lions may feel most accomplished when they tackle their daily to do list as soon as possible before their energy levels begin to fall in early afternoon. Lions typically wind down in early evening. So think about that.
Brett Johnson [:Are you a lion? Recognize it. If you are, good for you. But understand how your body works and when is the best time that you're most efficient. Now, roughly 55% of people are bears, making this the most common sleep chronotype. Like bears and the wild, people with this chronotype follow the sun waking up when it rises in early morning and retiring as darkness falls in the early evening, making nighttime social activities kind of a challenge. So to understand, being a bear, you're most productive probably middle of the day, 10 AM to 2 PM in your head Don the bed about 10 o'clock. The wolf. Well, if you know someone who isn't a morning person, chances are they're a wolf.
Brett Johnson [:About 15% of people have this chronotype. Wolves usually wake up later in the day and tend to get burst of energy in the evening. So they're waking up about 9 o'clock, they're most productive in the afternoon 1 to 5 and they're not hitting the bed till midnight. And then, you've got the dolphin. Yes, Dolphins are able to remain alert while sleeping so as to evade predators, and people with this sleep chronotype often complain of insomnia, tend to be prone to fragmented sleep patterns, and are sensitive to light and noise while they sleep. So a dolphin typically wakes up at 6 in the morning. They're most productive much later in the afternoon even into early evening, 3 to 7 and they're heading to bed around 11 o'clock. So, again, what's it got to do with you? Well, if you understand your patterns and don't try to fight them.
Brett Johnson [:If you're a bear, a dolphin, a lion, no matter who you are, understand when you are most productive. That is the key to this whole podcast. Understand where you feel great and get the job done then. And and as you heard, all 4 of these animals have about a 4 to 5 hour period that they're most productive. So what when it is? So what understand it and make the best podcast you can. Create the best content you can. Really focus in on what you wanna do with your podcast during those most productive times and you feel you feel much better about what you've created and also you're respectful of what your body is able to give you. Podcasting is a marathon, not a sprint.
